Golden Retriever Fact of The Week #2

This week I have two Golden Retriever facts to share with you.

Fact 1: Golden Retrievers fall into the Sporting category of dog breeds. Some other breeds that meet this classification are Pointers, Setters and Spaniels.

Dogs that fall into the Sporting Group are alert, smart and very active. They are also excellent swimmers and can navigate through a forest without a second thought. Many of these breeds are still used for hunting. Being active breeds, sporting dogs require plenty of exercise and and plenty of space to do it in. Don’t worry, you can still own a Golden Retriever without owning a farm. Just make sure you have somewhere they can get plenty of exercise like a park, or hiking trails.

Fact 2: Golden Retrievers are very smart and love to please. The first 3 AKC Obedience Champion titles won were won by Golden Retrievers. According to the AKC:

“Obedience trials demonstrate the dog’s ability to follow specified routines in the obedience ring and emphasize the usefulness of the dog as a companion to humankind.  The objective of obedience trials is to recognize dogs that have been trained to behave in the home, in public places, and in the presence of other dogs in a manner that will reflect credit on the sport of obedience at all times and under all conditions”. ~American Kennel Club

So if you are just looking for a loyal and happy companion or a dog to compete or go hunting with, Golden Retrievers can pretty much do it all. Hopefully these facts were interesting and you learned something new. Come back next Wednesday for a new Golden Retriever fact!!

Day 24: Kinston

I still have a few photos left from our trip to the BBQ festival last weekend so I decided I should bore everyone with more photos from Kinston.

A museum for the CSS Neuse, a Confederate ship from the civil war, was allowing people in for free. Of course we had to check it out. Apparently the Confederates scuttled it because they didn’t want the Union Army to get their hands on it after they lost the city. It never traveled more than a mile from where it was built. They set it on fire in the Neuse River and that is where it remained for almost a century. In the 60’s it was found and the recovery process began. Eventually 15,000 artifacts were recovered.

All that remained was the bottom.

I was surprised that the wood looked as good as it did after being underwater for almost 100 years.

This is what the top half would have looked like.

And the final image is just a candid shot of an artist at the festival working with a piece of wood.

As always, thanks for stopping by! Have a great weekend!

Pet Photography

As someone who is still very much a beginner in photography I am constantly scouring the internet for useful information. YouTube has been an excellent source for learning everything from lighting (still working on that one ha-ha) to all the features of your my camera and more.

I have picked up a few books along the way and subscribed to photography magazines. I am constantly reading and then attempting to recreate what I have read. I don’t really have a specific genre or style of photography that I adhere to at the moment but I would say it is pretty clear that I like to take pictures of Oshie ha-ha. So I was surprised and ecstatic when I came across a post from the Fuji Film WordPress blog.

There are many photography blogs on WordPress that provide me with all kinds of inspiration and knowledge but this was the first post I had seen specifically about pet photography. Below is a description and link to the article. If you are a pet blogger or just like taking pictures of your pets for Instagram or Facebook I would suggest you check it out!

Pro photographer John Rourke has put a few tips together that might be fun to try out if you want to get a great shot of your pooch…. some of them might even work on the kids too!
