Mississippi Kite

Fierce Raptor

Well maybe not so fierce because I have only observed it eating bugs but the Mississippi Kite is fun to watch. They have excellent eye site and are quite capable at capturing flying insects like Dragonflies and beetles. They can put on quite an aerobatic show when when they find a target. They will head off to South America for the winter but I hope they hang out around our house a bit longer.

Shot with my Canon 7d2 and a Tamron 150-600mm lens at 600mm. I rented this lens just to get closer shots of the Kites. Still getting used to the focal length and hoping to get some sharper pictures soon.

Oshie and Birds

I figured it was probably time to post some new pictures but I don’t have anything all that interesting to post at the moment so here is a shot of Oshie running and two shots of a Mississippi Kite returning to its perch with a meal. The kites have been hanging around in a tree across from our house catching all the big flying bugs. It is pretty neat to watch the aerial acrobatics they perform while chasing dragon flies and other large flying insects.

Mississippi Kite?

I took this photograph early Friday morning of last week. Initially I thought it might be a Red Shouldered Hawk because they are always around the neighborhood but then I notice the coloring was different and it let me get a lot closer. After a little internet search I am going to guess Mississippi Kite but I could be wrong.

Shot with my Canon 7d Mark 2 and Tamron 70-300mm lens at 300mm. Processed in Lightroom and Photoshop.
