Oshie And The Egg Test

Golden Retrievers have a soft mouth. That might seem like a weird statement to make because when you look at a dogs mouth you see a big floppy tongue and a bunch of large hard teeth. What I mean by this is that Golden Retrievers are able to carry delicate items in their mouth without damaging them. This is one of the characteristics that makes them a great retriever. If you are a hunter you wouldn’t want your retriever to bring back a mangled bird would you?

We were well aware of this and had even heard the claims that they could carry and egg in their mouth without breaking it. Recently on social media we had seen a few videos of owners testing this on their beloved Goldies with success. Now we don’t doubt that they do have soft mouths but we wanted to see if Oshie was capable of completing this challenge. We suspected he might but were also prepared for him to break the egg.  Below is the video we made of Oshie attempting the challenge. He gave it his best ha-ha.

Enjoy!

Does Your Dog Take Medication?

How many of you fellow dog owners have to give your furry friend medication in pill form each month? Do you experience difficulty in getting your dog to actually swallow the pill and if so how do you trick your canine friend into swallowing the medicine?

In our case Oshie has to take one pill every month that covers heart-worm, flea and ticks (I think). The pill is supposedly beef flavored or scented however Oshie hates it. As soon as you try to give it to him he is running for cover. We have tried smothering it in peanut butter, wrapping it in cold cuts or cheese and breaking it into tiny pieces and mixing it in with his food. Not a single one of these methods has worked without fail. We have had the most success with hiding it in some kind of treat like the cold cuts or cheese but it still takes a while to get him to actually eat it. Check out this short video of the process.

Sometimes I think he refuses to eat the pill on purpose because he knows he will keep getting treats.

If you have trouble getting your dog to take their medication check out the comments on the video. There are some great suggestions posted by people who have viewed the video and experienced the same troubles.

Please don’t hesitate to comment on the video if you have a method that has worked well for you! Have a great weekend!

Oshie loves doughnuts!

Being the spoiled dog that he is, Oshie has developed a taste for the finer things in life like fresh (well maybe not really fresh) doughnuts. On the weekends we usually take a morning drive with a mandatory stop for coffee to fuel the rest of the day. Of course Oshie tags along on the rides because he loves being in the car with the windows down where he can catch all the scents! This means that he usually gets a treat in the form of whipped cream or the occasional plain doughnut. Don’t worry we know they aren’t good for him and he doesn’t get them everyday, but a treat every once in a while isn’t going to hurt right? And it is impossible to say no to that face!

Anyway here is a short video of Oshie, who had already eaten his treat, practically begging for the doughnut that I had saved for myself. You also get to see his newest trick at the end! He has learned speak. Probably the hardest trick to teach so far as he is not much of a barker. Enjoy!
